The Golden Twenties, “an awakening was in the air: technical innovation, young arts like film and photography, and unprecedented music like jazz.” Glashütte (Germany), world-famous known as the city of timepieces since the nineteenth century, the year of 1927, two sibling companies were founded: Uhren-Rohwerke-Fabrik Glashütte AG (UROFA) and Uhrenfabrik Glashütte AG, known as UFAG. Chairman and Managing Director of both was Dr. Ernst Kurtz, a jurist who quickly recognized the wristwatch was the future. Making wristwatches that were especially reliable and durable, they received the name “Tutima”, derived from the Latin word for “safe, secure.” A brand was born, with no need comparison to Swiss brands.
 
In 1939 the companies began planning for what would become one of Glashütte’s most famous watches: the Reich’s air force watch or what we call today the original Tutima Glashütte pilot’s chronograph. The war, the ministry of defense, and the factories themselves demanded that this pilot’s chronograph be an especially reliable one. The prerequisites for this watch were laid out precisely defined in the ministry’s strict spec booklet. It was until 1941 when Tutima launched the high precision pilot’s chronograph (Fliegerchronograph) under this brand name for the German Luftwaffe (air force).

Very rare and unique timepiece! In fact, after talking to Tutima, we discovered that the 18K yellow gold examples were produced on an order only basis, and that Tutima themselves does not have an accurate record of how many 18K yellow gold examples were produced, but they stress that while it is not a “limited edition” it is indeed an incredibly rare piece. In fact, we encourage you to do your own google searching to see that there are very few examples even photographed, let alone available for sale.
 
Inspired on the Tutima Flieger Chronograph from 1941, the first German two-pusher flyback chronograph wristwatch; incorporated the benefits of modern technology and contemporary materials, this is a re-issue of the 1941 model released in the early 1990s, Tutima Classic Flieger Chronograph, reference 753-01 and dated from 2001.
 
With a classic look and the vintage style, it is cased in a 39mm satin-finished cased and coin-edge bidirectional bezel (with iconic red reference marker at 12), all in 18K solid yellow GOLD (produced only on order basis). Exhibition case back.
 
It is a manual-wind watch with an original Tutima movement caliber Valjoux 7760, handwound chronograph (60 seconds, 30 minutes), 21 jewels, 52 hours power reserve.
 
Nice black dial with luminous Arabic Numerals and luminous skeleton-style hands. Very high-resolution minute chapters. Sub-seconds at 9 o'clock, the 30-minute chrono register is at 3 o'clock. The sweep second chrono hand is very long and extends into the high-resolution section of the minute chapters (allowing to determine timing to the fraction of a second).

It is coming with a brand new black Genuine Leather two-piece strap.

Vintage watches are traditionally smaller than today's watches. Men’s watches typically measure between 29-36mm wide (some larger, some smaller) excluding the crown. In the listing details we typically try to do our best to list all pertinent dimensions of a watch. If you don't see it, or we failed to do so, please reach out to us. Women’s watches from the 1900s-1970s were also much smaller than today's offerings. Please also feel free to ask any questions you have pertaining to size.
We prefer to shoot photographs outside when weather is permitting. However, when we shoot indoors, please be aware that we shoot our photographs inside of lightboxes that are lit with 360 LED bulbs. This indeed magnifies any flaws. Usually, they are much less obvious to the naked eye. Having said that, we never photoshop any of our photography, remove blemishes, etc. We adjust lighting when necessary, but what you see is what you are getting, and we take pride in that.
